The world today is moving faster than ever, spurred on by the younger generations whose lives revolve around social media and multi-purpose platforms.
Realising this, Astro Radio has seized the opportunity to move with the times and change the way content and information is presented, through the introduction of two new radio brands: Zayan and goXUAN.
According to Chief Executive Officer Datuk Jake Abdullah, the new channels, along with existing channels, are no longer to be seen as just radio stations.
Instead, he said, they want to be more than that, becoming interactive platforms for announcers and listeners to share information and lifestyle posts.
“We are changing from the concept of radio stations to the concept of brands.
“You need to think of it as a webpage with a radio station, not a radio station with a webpage,” he said to Astro AWANI at the launch of Zayan in Bangsar today.
By August 2017 alone, over three million Malaysians listened to their favourite radio channels via streaming, making Zayan and goXUAN both radio brands driven by digital platform for its community to interact.
Zayan is the first Malaysian radio brand for the modern Muslim, with aspirations to provide this ever-expanding community with music, content and Islamic-influenced dialogues.
“Why Zayan? I think there is a niche for a brand bringing these themes into the market, especially as the halal economy is currently booming,” said Jake.
Zayan has been on air for almost two months and is clearly receiving positive feedback due to its knowledgable content with a casual but clear approach.
Mawi, one of Zayan’s announcers, says the radio brand is has arrived at the perfect time with today’s youth prone to reject content presented in established ways, though the topics may interest them.
“Sometimes these youths want to study religion, but they don’t want anything too heavy, or difficult to accept and digest.
“But Zayan is a platform where they can learn up and engage with positive topics in a relaxed way,” he explains.
At the same time, this Akademi Fantasia (AF) 3 star presenting with Anas Tahir in the morning Salam Bros segment is also grateful and happy for a radio brand in line with his soul and lifestyle.
Before being known as Raja SMS, Mawi was once announcer/DJ at weddings and supermarkets, and his longtime dream of becoming a radio announcer has finally come true.
“I joined AF because my target at the time was to become an announcer, and after seeing many AF stars like Nana, Adi dan Burn go on to become radio announcers I saw it as my chance.
“When I got in, I aimed to stay on for one or two weeks before getting eliminated, as long as i could be a DJ. But things turned out differently and in the finals, suddenly there I was as a singer.
“I actually didn’t want to be a singer, but praise be to Allah, it was providence. After 12 years, (my dream to become a radio announcer) has finally come to fruition,” he added.
Along with Mawi and Anas, Zayan also features Lin Ariffin, Raqib, dan Falyq as announcers with the tagline ‘Indah di Hati’.
The Zayan app can be downloaded for free on the Google Playstore dan Apple App Store, and listeners can interact with announcers through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Youtube.
Listeners can also tune in to Zayan on 104.9 FM in the Klang Valley, 98.1 FM in Alor Setar, 106.4 FM in Ipoh, 98.9 FM in Melaka, 92.8 FM in Johor Bahru and 91.6 FM in Kuantan.
goXUAN is a trendsetter for the local Chinese Generation Z community, delivering the latest hits, trends and hottest topics for the current social media-savvy generation.
Unlike other radio brands, goXUAN is visually-driven with live studio broadcasts and entertainment content delivered throughout the day over digital platforms.
goXUAN is available to view over its free app on the Google Playstore dan Apple App Store, and listeners can interact with the brand over Whatsapp and other platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
It is on the air on 88.9 FM in the Klang Valley and 107.6 FM in Pulau Pinang.
